timing. We have used a combination of live imaging, gene expression analysis, and physical theory to explore the organization and function of the segmentation clock, the synchronized oscillating gene network that underlies the dynamics of somitogenesis. I will discuss new experimental results identifying somitogenesis period mutants, and corresponding theoretical approaches that explain the collective control of cellular oscillations at the tissue level in terms of the delays in the coupling between cells. Such effects should be important in any biological clock where communication between oscillators is slow relative to the period of the clock.

A Feedback Quenched Oscillator Produces Turing Patterning with One Diffuser

Efforts to engineer synthetic gene networks that spontaneously produce patterning in multicellular ensembles have focused on Turing's original model and the "activator-inhibitor" models of Meinhardt and Gierer. Systems based on this model are notoriously difficult to engineer. We present the first demonstration that Turing pattern formation can arise in a new family of oscillator-driven gene ne...

Morphogenesis by coupled regulatory networks: reliable control of positional information and proportion regulation.

Based on a non-equilibrium mechanism for spatial pattern formation we study how position information can be controlled by locally coupled discrete dynamical networks, similar to gene regulation networks of cells in a developing multicellular organism. As an example we study the developmental problems of domain formation and proportion regulation in the presence of noise, as well as in the prese...

Engineering prokaryotic gene circuits

Engineering of synthetic gene circuits is a rapidly growing discipline, currently dominated by prokaryotic transcription networks, which can be easily rearranged or rewired to give different output behaviours. In this review, we examine both a rational and a combinatorial design of such networks and discuss progress on using in vitro evolution techniques to obtain functional systems. Moving bey...
